North Park U is in Deep Shit. I Mean, Water.

So yesterday the heavens opened up and the rains poured down. And poured, and poured. The heavens are currently still opened up and lettin' loose.

This morning, my roomie and I decided decided to go puddle-jumping and mud-sliding. Innocent fun. We ended up looking like this:

056

As the day progressed, the North Branch rose. Kaitlyn and I got word that Burgh (boys n girls dorm) and Anderson (8-floor girls' dorm) got evacuated (!!!!!) (thank God we're in Ohlson this year!) because the basements were flooded and the electric needed to be turned off. Anderson parking lot turned into a lake: (pic. taken by KB)

Here's the North Branch:

Here's a tree that was swept away and is now stuck against the bridge:

As you can see, that fence is supposed to keep the river in.. it's not working any more: (courtesty of KL)

Carmen and Spaulding, the roads along the river, have been sandbagged: (pic by KL)

These pictures do not even come close to letting you know how bad the situation is.... my friends and I were out for a 2AM stroll (less than an hour ago) and I saw one of my Phys Plant buddies.. he and our other Phys Plant workers have been on campus since 5AM trying to figure out what the HECK to do. Already our new $250,000 condensor in the basement of Magnuson is fried. A quarter of a million dollars, down the drain. Burgh, newly renovated over the summer? The basement's flooded. Hundreds of students have been evacuated from the dorms because of unsafe living conditions and rumors are floating around that classes will not resume for at least a week.

This is the ground entrance to Magnuson (the building which houses our cafeteria, numerous classrooms, and other misc. rooms): (pics by KC)

As you can see, water is cascading down the stairs... the basement has 10 feet of water in it... leading to the death of a condensor and I'm guessing the inevitable deaths of our boilers and other water heaters etc.

My Phys Plant friend also mentioned that the river is dangerously near to the windows in Carlson. By dangerously near, I mean that the river only has to rise 1 more foot and it will be completely level with the windows. If it continues to rise, the windows will burst and the basement of carlson, home to multiple office, lab rooms, classrooms, etc, will be flooded. Not only this, we also have boilers, water heaters, and condensors int he basement of Carlson and it will affect the entire freakin campus.
Here's the river/Carlson:

Anyway I'm kind of freaked out by all this, and the huge, enormous possibility of huge, enormous damage. However, it is freakin EXCITING and I have certainly enjoyed today and my multiple tours of campus and things have gotten progressively worse. I've been hearing sirens every couple minutes; a fire started in the roof of Magnuson because of electrical issues. I sure wouldn't mind if we miss a couple days of classes but a week?  And all the damage? How is this being financed? I just heard on the news that Chicago reversed the flow of the Chicago River, first time they've done that in 6 yrs, and it's helped a little bit. I've heard that people who've been in the area for twenty years have NEVER seen the river this bad.

This is CRAZY!

Oh. My. Word.

Today, I finally realized why the "I love you" hand-language sign makes sense. For the first time, I get it.

I'm a little slow.

So I had quite the adventure yesterday. I had to go to Lancaster to get a mole on my back removed. That whole part was pretty uneventful - I went past the place where I was supposed to go because I didn't know the name of the facility, but after I called and asked, things worked out just fine. However, I remember noticing that it was kinda hard to accelerate and checking to make sure I was in the right gear (I was). So I started off for home, and it's getting harder and harder to accelerate. Then my radio just dies and I start getting worried. I turned of the A/C and tried to put down my windows instead, but they wouldn't work. I tried calling Dad but he was at an apt so I called Dan instead. At this point, I was behind Park City about to turn onto Plaza Blvd and from there, Manheim Pike to get onto 283. I was sitting at the redlight and then tried to go when it turned green but my car wouldn't budge. To make a looong story shorter, I called AAA and made arrangements.. I was waiting outside my car when a police vehicle pulled up and asked what was wrong. I gave him my keys and the car started right up! He checked everything - radio, windows, acceleration - and it all seemed to work, and he said I was good to go. I still felt misgivings, but I called off AAA and started on my way home. For the first maybe 5 minutes it seemed ok, but once I got on the highway I started noticing again it was hard to accelerate and my windows wouldn't go up. I was hoping that I could make it to Mr. Z's (our mechanic) though, so I kept going. I got off at the Rheems/Etown exit and had to stop my car because of traffic. It just died, right there in the left turn lane. Fortunately, it was wide enough so that people could go around me as I waved them on. A man in a red truck pulled up beside me and asked if my car died, so I said yes. He nodded and drove off and I didn't really think anything of it. A few moments later though, I looked up and saw that he had parked across the road on the shoulder and was coming over. He tried starting my car and putting my blinkers on (nothing worked) then put the car in neutral and helped push it across the road to the shoulder behind his truck. It was really a miracle that at that time of day, there were no cars coming in either direction for the amount of time it took to push my car across; as soon as it was over, there was a steady stream. Anyway, the guy waited until I was able to get ahold of dad and didn't leave until I told him that someone was coming to pick me up. I thanked him profusely and he just said, "I have a daughter, and if her car broke down, I'd hope someone would help her."  So even though my car broke down twice in rather busy areas, I was kept safe.

A friend of ours picked me up and dropped me off at home. But wait. The story does not end there.

After my dad got home from work that evening (and by evening, I mean that it was dark out, probably around 9 or a little later), he wanted to go get the car, so we drove out in his car. My car started up fine as it had before and made it around halfway to the mechanics before it died. I had been following behind my car (driven by Dad) in his car, but there were a couple cars in between us and I ended up taking the wrong turn (it was dark, ok?!) so by the time I turned onto the right road, I had no idea where Dad was untillll I heard him yelling "ALYSSA! STOP!" and saw him waving his cellphone in the rearview mirror. Dad was able to get my car into neutral and back in up so that it was in front of his car, and then he PUSHED it with his car all the way home. Our house was only a couple miles away, but when you're steering a dead car with no headlights when it's dark outside, it seems much longer.  Plus, all my windows were now up and the A/C didn't work and it was very HOT.  But we got it back to the house pretty uneventfully, where it was towed away early this morning.
Ah the joys of being a car owner. I must say though, my car has been very very well behaved up to this point, and it has served me well all summer.
The END!

Twilight Zone Meets my Kitchen

A couple evenings ago, I was straightening up the kitchen before bed. There was a beanie-baby/plush type bird lying on the floor, and a remote control car next to it. I picked up the bird with one hand, and as I bent over again to get the car, I heard a really weird noise, sort of like a light drumming or muted thumping. I paused and stared intently at the cabinets next to me and wondering if we had more mice (remember the Xanga story recounting multiple dead mice and multiple frenzied washings of many dishes??) The noise stopped though so I set the bird on the counter and continued to clean. Later on, I again picked up the bird and headed toward the toybin in the next room. On my way, I again leaned over to pick up a random toy from a kitchen chair. Once again, I heard that strange noise and stopped dead in my tracks. This time, it sounded like it was coming from the refrigerator. I was actually kinda scared - what the heck was this noise?!?! Then it dawned on me. I looked down at the bird in my hand and squeezed it. Sure enough, cue Strange Noise.  Yup. I was afraid of a toy woodpecker. And yes, I laughed at myself.

So, today when Dan and I were on a bus on our way back to the city after visiting the United Center, I saw a sign advertising....   tuffed burrit.

I wonder what that is?
